Restoration of old trunk wood

The carpenter's trade is one of the oldest masters in the world

Since ancient times especially in Egypt, in the Middle Ages and today, the carpenter perpetuates the tradition and the know-how of woodworking to make all kinds of objects: furniture, door frames, carriages, armchairs ... and Of course the trunks.

Initially the carpenter / packer was called layetier. He made packages that later were wrapped in precious and waterproof cloth, giving a new dimension to the boxes "packing", becoming a trunk, object of fashion and luxury in its own right. The container becomes as important as the contents. Let this jewel case be as beautiful as its contents.

This is the first step in the manufacture of trunk, all begins with the work of the carpenter, who will build the trunk structure.

Treatment

it is unusual to work on the wooden structure, which is solid and designed to last.

However moisture is often responsible for the deterioration of old trunks Louis Vuitton, Goyard and Moynat.

The rotting wood then attracts mushrooms, worms, larvae, insects and pests of all kinds who love wet woods to lay their eggs there.

When one sees the traces of their passage it is often too late.

The xylophagous insects:

Are redoubtable enemies of wood, in the form of larva and worms.

Equally harmful they are also present in the form of insect

The most common insects are termites and beetles.

The problem when you have pests in a trunk that you bring in your home is a bit like a Trojan. Hidden in the trunk they are ready to attack all your family furniture, carpentry, parquet flooring etc.

Whatever the contamination of the woods, a curative treatment is essential.

Xylophene treatment will prevent pests from returning and settling but will not strengthen weakened wood. In some cases, we do some injection therapy.

Caution The dough has wood as a repair solution!

The wood pulp fills the holes, cracks but will not consolidate the structure.

Only a structural recovery, consisting of replacing the damaged wood is a perennial solution.

We do not use wood pulp on the restorations of our trunks, it is nonsense to use products of this nature

Partial structure recovery

Example of a Louis Vuitton wardrobe trunk stored in moisture and eaten

By insects, fungi and other pests.

The decayed, attacked and contaminated woods, affecting the very structure of the trunk, are then withdrawn until they find a holy wood.

Adjustment and recovery of structure with wood of the same thickness and of the same nature.

This is the carpenter's traditional work.

Trunk finished, restored identically from the origin.

The lozine is new because the original one was not in our possession, the canvas comes from a trunk too damaged to be restored. The canvas is of the same generation and period.

After restoration this trunk keeps all the authenticity and the coast of a collection trunk.

Manufacturing

We manufacture all the solid wood pieces deteriorated from our trunks.

All the parts strictly respect the characteristics of the original parts.

Registration "L. Vuitton"

Wooden slats

Another example is the wooden laths that reinforce the trunks, made of solid beech and tinted on demand.

Example of a Louis Vuitton mail box from 1906, whose laths of beech wood were totally eaten by the pests.

After cleaning and restoration of canvas and leather.

The damaged wooden slats have been replaced by beech wood of the same kind and quality, an aging of the wood was made to be in harmony and not to denote with the age of our Louis Vuitton trunk. This is the work of the restorer.

Wardrobe drawers

Will be entrusted to the sheath after manufacture.

Wardrobe Feet

The feet of wardrobe are in solid beech, and covered with a thin layer of metal (which will press lacquered in black on this version).

Our approach to restoring old trunks is not to "kill" the soul and the history of our trunks. We therefore make aging on our new parts in order to respect the aesthetic and harmony with the other woods present on the trunk.

The patina of the wood and its aging are unique to each trunk, so we make tailor-made on a case by case basis.
