The seller was careful to send this link to reassure the buyer.
Letting it appear that it would save 40% compared to an expert's estimate.
But as you can read in a previous article these estimates
have no value:
This story is still a sad demonstration.
Appointment is made with the seller on a parking lot in front of a gendarmerie in the south of France.
A transaction that looks healthy. Our client is reassured by this charming couple of fifties who tells him that it is a family trunk and that they are sad to part with it.
He buys the trunk and sends us on the way back these three photos taken on the place of the appointment.
We were in charge of cleaning her so that she could find her place in her luxurious apartment.
... it was already too late!
By analyzing the photos received, we could see repairs of very poor quality and several "strange" details such as: the underside, the slats of wood cut, its many labels that hid things that could be seen in the photos of the 'ad.
But we were still far from imagining what to do next.
A few days later we receive the trunk in our workshops.
The bad surprises are linked and leave us speechless!
It is rare to see so many hidden vices on the same trunk, a pure swindle!
Our client, desperate, understood that he had been scammed.
The whole underside of the trunk had been "made up". But why ? we still did not know it:
- The canvas underneath was plastic and smelled very bad. It was a fake Louis Vuitton canvas from a fake Keepall bag. We could distinguish the seams of the handles. The canvas had also been laid no matter how the logo was reversed between the two parts of the cover.
- No handle
- The rust-rusted steels were chewed and covered with a thick layer of black paint.
- The lozine replaced by a leather on which our rider had written VVVV ballpoint pen, seeking to imitate the initials LV ...
- The original lozine belt had been replaced by brown waxed cardboard, all glued to the glue.
- The nails , also glued, were only a few millimeters high, and fixed like a stink bug.
- There were also screws with nail heads stuck on them.
The interior was not left out
On one side what was left of origin was used up to the rope.
- The torn tissue
- Bad smells
- The broken leather handles glued to the glue.
On the other, what had been made up was entirely redone
A repair based on newspaper, orange wallpaper and a succession of boards, pieces of cardboard glued and stapled to each other.
Far from the original finishes of this trunk of 1935.
The revelation !
It was then that this trunk appeared to us as an air of déjà vu!
We then seek.
We will need several hours of research in our thousands of photos, emails, sms, mms ... archives of all requests received in recent years.
BINGO! We find an email of a request made 2 years ago but the person did not follow up ...
It was our trunk!
A Louis Vuitton wardrobe trunk stored in the damp and eaten by insects, mushrooms and other pests.
It was at this moment that we understood the extent of the work to be done, the many transformations and missing pieces on this trunk.
Our client, furious and disappointed, left us carte blanche. He knew that he was going to lose feathers there, but that we were the only ones who could get him out of this impasse and restore his trunk while respecting the rules of the art.
It was time for us to take action
But a bad feeling is invading us.
While we thought we had seen all this trunk, the following chilled our blood!
At the moment when we dismantled all the "tinkered" elements and that we removed the attacked and contaminated woods attacking the very structure of the trunk,
White larvae came out of the wood and fell to the ground!
The trunk was inhabited! A vision of horror!
In addition to having done anything during the "restoration" the person had not even treated the wood and the larvae continued to destroy a little more every day this historical trunk!
It was necessary to intervene QUICKLY! remove all contaminated wood, treat the remaining wood and prevent the spread of these pests!
The interior is disassembled for integral healing treatment with xylophene .
The partially cut wooden slats are removed to be replaced in their entirety.
After the storm the comfort.
Adjustment and resumption of structure with poplar wood of the same thickness and nature.
This is the traditional work of the carpenter, our core trades.
Made without any screws! Traditional assembly of the trunk maker in the service of French heritage.
Manufacture of beech wood legs, identical to those that were originally.
The love of work well done.
Degraded by rust and oxidation, it was necessary to redo the metal parts.
These accessories have a real reinforcement function and participate in the structure of the trunk
The leather handles , glued to the glue, could not be preserved and our client wanted to be able to use his wardrobe on a daily basis.
For this reason we made identical handles.
Without L. Vuitton marking of course
The restoration of the original origin implies great expertise and a lot of patience, as the details are numerous and important.
After the restoration of the structures we were able to proceed with the cleaning of the canvas, the woods and the polishing of the brasses.
The outer interlining of the torn drawers and the missing part of the bottom are completed to 65% with old Vuittonite orange canvas.
The drawer interiors are redone thanks to our old stock of beige canvas.
The whole of the original interior is dismantled to treat the woods and rested identically.
After restoration this trunk finds all its authenticity.
